Documentary Film Screening: Pig Feast, Colonialism in our time
Join us for a free screening of Pig Feast, a documentary with English subtitles and audio.
Synopsis:
Pig Feast exposes the large-scale land grabbing of Indigenous Papuan territories for bioethanol production. The film examines how government policies and corporate interests are driving the destruction of millions of hectares of rainforest, threatening biodiversity, traditional livelihoods, and the survival of Indigenous communities.
Historical Context:
Papua was not part of Indonesia at the time of Indonesian independence in 1945. The dispute between Indonesia and the Netherlands over the territory was brought to the United Nations and culminated in the 1969 Act of Free Choice. Widely criticized by Papuans, historians, journalists, and human rights organizations as a sham referendum, the process involved only over 1,000 Papuans, handpicked by Indonesian military, forced to voting on behalf of a population of about a million to join Indonesia.
To this day, human rights abuses, environmental destruction, and economic inequality persist. Despite Papua's vast natural wealth, Indigenous Papuans remain among the poorest and most marginalized communities in Indonesia.
Following the screening, there will be an open discussion about the film and the ongoing social, environmental, and political issues facing Papua.
Please bring your own snacks and drinks.
Admission is free.
