🏰 Guided Tour: The Story of Håkon's Hall

750 Years of Glory, Decline & Restoration

Step inside one of Norway's most extraordinary medieval buildings and journey through 750 years of dramatic history. Håkon's Hall has witnessed the grandeur of royal banquets, the footsteps of kings and queens, the shadows of wartime commanders, and the silence of forgotten prisoners — all within its magnificent stone walls.

This immersive English-language guided tour unravels the layered past of a building that has endured centuries of transformation, neglect, and triumphant restoration.

🏛️ What You'll Discover

⛪ Late 900s — Christ Church rises as the very first structure on Holmen, accompanied by a bishopric and monastery, laying the spiritual foundation of the site.

🪵 Early 1100s — A wooden royal residence is established on the grounds, marking the beginning of royal occupation.

👑 1200s — King Håkon Håkonsson commissions a grand stone hall, elevating the site into a prestigious medieval royal palace.

⚔️ 1270 — Magnus Lagabøte, son of King Håkon, constructs a sea-facing fortress — a structure that lives on today as part of the iconic Rosenkrantz Tower.

🔒 1500s — The royal residence undergoes a dramatic transformation, repurposed as Bergenhus Fortress, signalling a new chapter in its long story.

🔧 19th–20th Century — After centuries of neglect and use as a mere storage facility, restoration efforts begin. Following a devastating explosion in 1944, the hall is painstakingly rebuilt and returned to the breathtaking state you see today.
