Handmade Clay Altars: Sacred Spaces Across Cultures

🌍 Join us for a creative workshop!

Taught by Muriel Wickman, students will hand sculpt a small clay altar while exploring the significance of altars and sacred spaces across Indigenous, BIPOC, and diasporic traditions.

🕊️ We’ll discuss how altars can serve as spaces for remembrance, honoring ancestors, spirituality, and personal reflection, allowing participants to create something meaningful to their own practices and beliefs.

About Your Instructor:

Muriel Wickman is the 2026 Artisan-In-Residence at Azadi Folk School. A Filipino-American artist, her work beautifully blends traditional designs with modern botanical inspiration.

🎨 Muriel is pursuing a Bachelor’s in psychology with a minor in studio art, aiming for a Master’s in Art Therapy. During her fellowship, she will focus on teaching Filipino folk art, henna, and working with organic materials like wool, natural dyes, plant fibers, and shells. She is also researching how craft can assist BIPOC communities in processing climate grief through decolonization and trauma healing, transforming complex emotions into joy and purpose.
