Intensive Improv Format "The BAT" with US Superstar Joe Bill

Info sull'evento

ImprovStar i**s so excited to host US Superstar
JOE BILL's Masterclass with his world-famous format
"THE BAT"

Workshop Details:
The Bat is a long-form narrative improv structure designed to create a dream-like, interconnected story. It was developed by Joe Bill and became popular through teaching and performances at Annoyance Theatre and in workshops internationally.

Key Characteristics of The Bat

  1. Group Mind

Performers aim for a shared subconscious storytelling. Scenes often feel associative rather than logically plotted.

  1. One Continuous World
  • Instead of separate sketches, the show gradually reveals that everything exists within a single narrative universe.
  1. Dream Logic

Characters, locations, and images recur in surprising ways. Scenes connect emotionally or symbolically rather than strictly through plot.

  1. Minimal Structure
  • No rigid beats like the Harold.
  • Connections emerge organically through listening and pattern recognition.
  1. Callbacks Become Meaningful

*Elements reappear later with deeper emotional context.

Joe Bill’s Influence

Joe Bill is known for emphasizing:* emotional commitment
ensemble awareness “playing from the gut”

  • following instinct rather than intellectual plotting

We will also perform it on stage, as a shorter 30 min Showcase-version, on the 28th April at Heppel & Ettlich Theater!

The Bat Workshop
In this workshop I will take you through the experience of one of my signature formats, The Bat, which is essentially a longform improv piece that players play with their eyes closed for an audience who experiences your “theater of the mind” as they sit in a darkened theater. The Bat may contain elements of both Narrative and Freestyle long form sensibilities, and each is somewhat a unique reflection of the collective personalities of the players who perform it. It is truly a joy ride in the dark. Probably best for
