
Japanese Shomyo Chant workshop with Junko Ueda
Join us for an enriching workshop that delves into the ancient Japanese Buddhist chant known as Shomyo, dating back to the 9th century. Under the expert guidance of Junko Ueda, participants will engage in the art of singing Shomyo.
Workshop Objectives:

- 🎶 Experience the profound essence of 1200-year-old Japanese ancient music and explore its enriching concepts.
- 🌬️ Develop awareness and control over your breathing.
- 💖 Learn about the energy center of the body, known as ‘Hara’ (Seika-Tanden), and discover techniques to alleviate stress.
- 🤸 Engage in simple body exercises that enhance overall concentration.
- ✨ Stimulate your inner creativity and enhance your vocalization and body control—skills beneficial for wind instrument players and vocalists alike.
This workshop is designed for everyone, regardless of musical background. Participants will be guided through slow melismatic Shomyo chanting, allowing for a deep focus on breathing and a tranquil state of mind. As we sing basic Shomyo melodies and connect with this ancient tradition, we will uncover the wisdom and power of breath and its fundamental importance to humanity.
Since 1995, Junko Ueda has been promoting Shomyo workshops, supporting global sustainability by emphasizing the significance of clean air for breathing.
Workshop Content:
- 🧘♀️ Warming Up: Focus on breath and body exercises centering on consciousness and the Hara.
- 🎵 Introduction to Shomyo: Learn various Shomyo melody patterns, followed by singing musical variations that utilize these patterns.
- 🎤 Traditional Shomyo Pieces: Practice singing 'Sange' and 'Taiyo'.
