A tour of a Baroque gem with a turbulent history.

Today’s Baroque St. Adalbert’s Church on the eastern side of Lower Square replaced the Gothic St. George’s Church that previously stood there in the second half of the 17th century. A Lutheran pastor served in the church, which had been designated for the Czech population since the 1530s. During the Thirty Years’ War, restrictions on the Catholic faith were imposed in Opava at the instigation of Karl von Liechtenstein, the hereditary ruler of the Principality of Opava. Protestant priests were expelled, and the Jesuit Order was summoned to the city, to whom the church was entrusted. They transformed it into a majestic complex where the world-renowned Johann (Gregor) Mendel spent his student years.

Estimated tour duration: 90 minutes.

Tickets can be purchased via GOOUT, at the Municipal House reception desk, or on-site if available.
