Margaret Preston
📍 Join us for the Margaret Preston exhibition at NGV Australia!
🖼️ Step into the world of Margaret Preston, whose art has profoundly influenced Australia's cultural landscape.
Born in 1875 in Adelaide, Preston traveled extensively, absorbing various artistic movements including Post-Impressionism, primitivism, the Arts and Crafts movement, and Japanese ukiyo-e. After returning to Sydney in 1919, she emerged as a key figure in promoting modernist principles in Australian art.
Her passion for defining a national art led her to explore the unfiltered designs of First Peoples, building a uniquely Australian visual language. Though her work highlighted the aesthetic value of these cultural materials, it also raised important conversations about appropriation and significance.
This retrospective exhibition not only showcases Preston's work alongside her contemporaries but also includes modern artists influenced by her legacy.
