After returning to Sydney in 1919, she emerged as a key figure in promoting modernist principles in Australian art.

Her passion for defining a national art led her to explore the unfiltered designs of First Peoples, building a uniquely Australian visual language. Though her work highlighted the aesthetic value of these cultural materials, it also raised important conversations about appropriation and significance.
