In the early hours of July 1, 2025, a proposed federal preemption of every state AI safety law seemed inevitable. With Sen. Ted Cruz attaching it to a significant bill, the replacement for state laws appeared as a void.

Despite intense advocacy for AI safety, the necessary votes were absent. Commentators, including Transformer’s Shakeel Hashim, expressed frustration, suggesting safety advocacy was ineffective, even declaring AI safety dead.

Then, at 4 AM, the preemption failed with a vote of 99–1. Shakeel expressed his delight at being proven wrong.

What caused this turnaround? The founders of Project Imago Dei played a crucial role. Join us on Saturday to hear their story, discover their contributions, and learn how to replicate such successful safety messaging.

Why This Matters, Even If You’ve Never Been to Church

• Neglectedness Argument: Christians represent the largest cultural common denominator in American politics.
• Existing Networks: Churches serve as vast distribution networks that AI safety and pro-human advocacy can leverage.
• Civic Engagement: Congregations are built for effort and engagement, fundamentally being pro-human.

Even Eliezer Yudkowsky has acknowledged the significance of a "broad tent." This event will explore operationalizing that vision.

Making the Message!

The key focus of this session is how to craft safety communications for audiences beyond the immediate safety community, tapping into specific cultural markets that need engagement.

We'll emphasize inspiring storytelling from a shared foundation. Why should existential risk not be the sole start for concern? We will construct a narrative arc to foster engagement.

As a practical example, we'll share a 5-minute excerpt from Shepherd's Warning, Session 1, our video curriculum for congregations that illustrates how to construct impactful messages.
