Join us for a transformative 2-day course where you'll dive into the art of Kintsugi, the Japanese technique of repairing broken ceramics with gold and silver! ๐ŸŒŸ

Course Outcome

By the end of this workshop, each participant will:

  • Complete two practice pieces:
    • One repaired ceramic with gold
    • One repaired ceramic with silver

What Is Included

  • Two ceramic practice pieces
  • All necessary tools and materials
  • Limited use of genuine gold and silver powder
  • Japanese matcha tea ceremony experience ๐Ÿต
  • Tea, light refreshments, and a simple lunch (sandwiches). Attendees with dietary restrictions are encouraged to bring their own lunch.

Matcha Tea Ceremony Experience

Enjoy a serene pause during the course with a matcha tea ceremony led by Soko-sensei, a certified Urasenke tea ceremony instructor with over a decade of experience. This experience reflects on the beauty of handmade objects and the significance of repair in daily life. ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ

Agenda

Day 1

  • Introduction to traditional urushi Kintsugi materials and process
  • Mixing mugi-urushi adhesive
  • Joining broken ceramic pieces
  • Mixing sabi-urushi filler
  • Sanding and intermediate urushi coating on the first piece

Day 2

  • Sanding and coating the second piece
  • Matcha tea ceremony experience
  • Fine line work with urushi
  • Application of gold and silver powder
  • Completion of both practice pieces

Personal Practice Pieces

Students may bring simple damaged ceramic objects which meet these criteria:

  • Made of ceramic (stoneware or porcelain)
  • Glazed and smooth surface
  • Size no larger than 12 ร— 12 ร— 12 cm
  • Maximum of five broken pieces
  • Chip smaller than 1 cm
  • No old glue or adhesive residue
    Note: Review by instructor is required; not all personal pieces may be completed during the course.

Important Pickup Information

Due to the curing process of urushi, all repaired objects will remain at the shop after the course and can be picked up the following day or week.

Safety Note

Urushi lacquer may cause skin irritation. Gloves will be provided, and safety instructions will be given. Participants with severe urushiol allergies are advised against attending.

Age Requirement

Participants must be 16 years and older.

Dress in clothing you donโ€™t mind getting dirty!

What to Bring

  • All materials are provided.
  • Optional: Your own broken piece (glossy glazed, palm-sized, ceramic, limited to 5 fragments) for mending.
