The history of ballroom culture is rich, rooted in Black and Latinx LGBTQ+ communities as a form of resistance and a platform for self-expression. Ballroom culture originated as a space for expression, resistance, and belonging, welcoming people of all identities, backgrounds, and appearances to participate and be seen. What began as drag balls evolved into a vibrant culture of performance, fashion, and competition. With elements like voguing—a dance style inspired by high-fashion poses and the poses of fashion models in Vogue magazine—this scene has evolved into a creative cornucopia featuring performance, fashion, and competition. Since the 1960s, different styles have emerged, including Old Way, New Way, and Vogue Femme, always delivered 100% attitude. Ballroom gained wider recognition in the early 1990s through Madonna's Vogue and the documentary Paris Is Burning, which offered an intimate look into the lives, struggles, and creativity of the New York ballroom scene. 🎭✨
