Barbizar arises from a fascination with the Barbie doll — an icon and role model for many girls since 1959. Who didn't grow up with her? Or with Fleur or Cindy? In this series, Saskia Frank photographs the doll in a playful way and investigates its role and influence in society.
With her bizarre proportions, eternal smile, and endlessly long legs, Barbie continues to represent a widely circulated beauty ideal. By taking her out of context, the doll gains new meaning, opening up questions around representation, identity, and the female body as a constructed image.
