Jak je důležité míti... Oscara
Oscar Wilde's famous comedy, performed by Divadlo MA, tells the story of a lonely, sophisticated man with a brilliant sense of humor, whom society punished for his need to be himself. A man who paid with his life for our right to openly declare our sexual orientation. Wilde wrote The Importance of Being Earnest at a time when Europe was in the midst of a fundamental shift in its understanding of sexuality. The emerging field of sexology began to describe the naturalness and innateness of homosexual orientation, while at the same time the legal system harshly criminalized any displays of intimacy between men. This paradoxical environment gave rise to coded speech, ambiguity, and the language of hidden references, which Wilde masterfully used in his work to reflect on the desire for freedom, individuality, and the right to one's own identity—thus fundamentally ahead of his time.
