✨ Join us for the second installment of the Punctum Film Club, featuring the iconic Greek musical drama Rembetiko from 1983! 🎬
This intriguing film sheds light on the rich history of Rembetiko, a poignant Greek music genre that blossomed in early 20th century Smyrna (modern-day Izmir, Turkey). With roots in the working class, its lyrics often touch upon themes of drugs, crime, and personal strife. Sadly, it faced censorship under the Greek government in the late 1930s.
The film narrates the life of the famed rembetiko singer Marika, tracing her journey from her childhood in Smyrna through tragic events to her emergence as a beloved artist, and her sacrifices along the way. It masterfully intertwines the musical landscapes of Rembetiko, with compositions by the talented Stavros Xarhakos, against the backdrop of significant historical events such as the deportations from Turkey, WWII, and the Greek Civil War.
🎶 Thanks to director Kostas Ferris, we will screen a digitally restored version from 2023.
