Join us for a unique opening celebration of Serpentine Sibyls, a captivating public art installation by Daniel Rothbart.
The event features a mesmerizing performance by Jeffrey Lependorf, a master of the shakuhachi (traditional Japanese bamboo flute). For about 40 minutes, he will weave an improvised musical meditation, merging traditional Zen practices with avant-garde musical techniques in harmony with three of Rothbart’s stunning floating sculptures.
Jeffrey is not only a composer and musician but also the Executive Director of the John Cage Trust and the director of the Art Omi: Music International Musicians Residency. He holds a doctorate and master’s degree in music composition from Columbia University and an undergraduate degree from Oberlin Conservatory. As a certified master of the shakuhachi, he was honored with the name “Kôkū” from master Yoshinobu Taniguchi. His music has even traveled to space, with a recording of his work "Night Pond" launching aboard the shuttle Atlantis in 1997.
This installation draws inspiration from the Sibyls—female prophetesses whose wisdom is sought in times of crisis. In our era of climate change, Rothbart’s sculptures evoke aquatic forms and plant life from the past, prompting reflections on human existence and environmental challenges. Set in the historic landscape of Snug Harbor, the installation invites contemplation on humanity's journey and future.
