Dive into the captivating history of Byzantium, from its evolution in the late third century CE to its enduring influence today! This course explores the socio-political landscape constructed around the founding of Constantinople by Constantine the Great in 330, lasting until the fall of Constantinople in 1453.
We'll traverse various eras, regions, and artefacts of the Byzantine Empire, unveiling the brilliance of its artistic heritage. Discover the pivotal architectural wonders across iconic cities such as Rome, Ravenna, Jerusalem, and Venice—each telling a story through mosaics, frescoes, icons, ivories, and manuscripts.
Engage with the visual culture of the East Roman Empire, considering both renowned historical figures and lesser-known individuals, particularly women, in Byzantine society. Experience firsthand visits to prestigious museums, including the British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, and National Gallery.
