The Great Auk: Magisterial, Iconic and Extinct
Join us for a fascinating in-person talk with Tim Birkhead, an eminent ornithologist, as he delves into the mystery surrounding the Great Auk—an iconic bird that became extinct in 1844. With 75 eggs and 80 skins relentlessly collected over the years, the disappearance of thirteen Great Auk eggs in 1965 prompted Tim’s quest to understand this remarkable species and reconstruct its lifestyle.
The session is not recorded or live-streamed, ensuring a unique, immersive experience. Following the talk, enjoy a drinks reception in our historic library with a paid bar, and be inspired by Tim's stunning bird paintings displayed in the Meeting Room.
Tim Birkhead has over 50 years of research experience focusing on guillemots, the close relatives of the Great Auk. His contributions have reshaped our understanding of avian mating systems. Don't miss this opportunity to learn more about a bird few have seen but many admire!
