The Talented Major Tallmadge: Presentation by Richard F. Welch 🎖️

Join us for a captivating presentation as we commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States with author and historian Richard F. Welch! This event offers a deep dive into the extraordinary life of Benjamin Tallmadge, a Setauket native and one of the Revolutionary War's pivotal military leaders and intelligence operatives.

🌟 Benjamin Tallmadge served as a trusted aide to George Washington, actively participating on the front lines during the fight for independence. He was instrumental in directing critical intelligence operations for the Patriot cause, showcasing his skills as a cavalry commander and strategist.

From the fierce Battles of Long Island, White Plains, and Germantown to daring raids against British positions on Long Island, Tallmadge distinguished himself in multiple theaters of the war. His efforts included protecting Patriot communities in Westchester from British and Loyalist attacks and leading an elite legion in combined land-and-sea operations.

💼 Perhaps most famously, Tallmadge oversaw Washington’s most active espionage network in Long Island and New York, playing a vital role in gathering intelligence and unraveling the Arnold-André conspiracy to surrender West Point to the British.

In addition, this presentation will shed light on Tallmadge’s impressive postwar career as a successful businessman and member of Congress, revealing how his influence extended well beyond the battlefield.
