Session One: Rented Virtue

We’ll dive into “Rented Virtue” by Will Manidis and Nabeel Qureshi. This thought-provoking essay explores how the Quakers established lasting businesses based on uncompromising principles. It questions whether we have replaced genuine virtue with institutional substitutes like ethics committees and mission statements.

Key Questions:

  • What does it mean to live according to your principles when it’s inconvenient?
  • How do we navigate the tension between comfort, ambition, and our values?

The essay argues that integrity cannot be outsourced; it must be practiced in our daily decisions, even if imperfectly.

What to Bring:

  • Your thoughts on the essay (read it if you can, but feel free to join even if you haven’t!)
  • Disagreements, personal stories, and questions you’ve been pondering.

Discussion Format:
We’ll spend an hour discussing the essay, followed by a fun dice game! 🎲

Venue:
We’ll gather in a cozy, library-like room filled with books, long wooden tables, and comfortable corners for conversation. Afterward, enjoy tea and baklavas in the quiet backyard while continuing our discussion. ☕🍰
