X Avant: Reasoning is a groundbreaking docu-concert film by Caribbean-Canadian artist and scholar Alanna Stuart (PYNE). This innovative work merges the sounds of Femmehall, a unique approach to dancehall music that blends heavy sub bass with gospel-inflected vocals, reflecting the rhythmic essence of 90s dancehall.
The film showcases a stripped-back solo performance, revealing the intricate process behind her music-making, embodying emotive vocals, pulsating kick drums, and improvisational movement. It also includes documentary footage from PYNE's transformative journey to Jamaica, her father’s homeland, where she connects with her roots, mentors, and chosen family, featuring iconic rhythms and freestyling moments in sound system yards.
Following the performance, Alanna invites guests to partake in thoughtful reflections on the themes presented. She delves into her ongoing research regarding Femmehall as both a musical and spatial practice, questioning how her diverse identities—Black, woman, Jamaican, Canadian—interact within the music's narrative.
