Hemorrhoid Loans Series, Chapter II
A Table Without Us situates a Lunar New Year dinner within the challenging themes of bodily debt. This installation investigates how care, silence, shame, money, and unaddressed emotions are navigated through food, seating arrangements, traditional rituals, and cleaning objects.
While a dining table typically symbolizes reunion and abundance, here it morphs into an inflamed body—seemingly whole and exquisite outwardly, yet congested and troubled internally.
The table narrates a story: who is served, who abstains, who pays, who is left out, who consumes, who cleans, and who takes the leftovers home.
This exhibition continues the thought-provoking exploration of Yu Shuk Pui Bobby’s ongoing series Hemorrhoid Loans《痔債》, which uses the metaphor of hemorrhoids to delve into chronic pain, shame, family history, caregiving, labor, and the societal teachings that condition us to silently endure discomfort.
