🌟 Experience History Alive! 🌟 Join us at Pennypacker Mills for an inspiring historical performance celebrating Phillis Wheatley, the first published African American poet!

🗓️ This captivating program, part of the Porch Performance Series, is brought to you by the Friends of Pennypacker Mills. Dive into the life of Phillis Wheatley (c.1753–1784) through a unique first-person portrayal by Dr. Daisy Century, a talented actor-historian.

✨ Wheatley, who was kidnapped from West Africa as a child and enslaved in Boston, defied the odds to become an acclaimed poet in the 18th century. Her groundbreaking 1773 book, Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral, made her the first Black woman to publish a book of poetry. She also corresponded with iconic figures like George Washington, challenging the norms of her time regarding race, intellect, and freedom.

🎭 Dr. Century combines deep historical insight with theatrical performance to provide an immersive experience, allowing modern audiences to connect with Wheatley’s remarkable journey.

🌳 Bring your blanket or chair for lawn seating and enjoy this outdoor experience! The event is free to attend, with a suggested donation of $2 per person.
