Rameau: Les Sauvages et Les Incas
Join us for an enchanting evening with Musica Antica as they perform two captivating entrées from Jean-Philippe Rameau's Les Indes Galantes (1735 & 1736): 🦅 Les Sauvages (The Savages) and 🌄 Les Incas du Perou (The Incas of Peru).
Les Sauvages draws inspiration from a remarkable performance by two Native Americans in Paris back in 1725, and has since become one of Rameau’s celebrated pieces. Set against the backdrop of idyllic, pre-colonial North America, it explores the clash between cunning French and Spanish explorers and a noble Native American, all in a quest for love.
Meanwhile, Les Incas reflects a fervent interest in the Spanish conquest of Mexico and Peru, featuring fascinating musical pieces that culminate in a stunning love duet between a conquistador and an Inca princess—while the high priest invokes the gods in an effort to eradicate both the conquerors and his own people through a volcanic eruption.
