AI Changed the Rules. Nobody Updated the Playbook

AI can now find a 27-year-old vulnerability hiding inside a trusted operating system in two days. It cost $20,000 to compute. A human researcher might never have thought to look.

That's the upside. Here's the problem it created.

Bug submissions are up 76% year-on-year. The average time to fix a vulnerability has stretched from 160 to 230 days. And the gap between a bug being found and being actively exploited has collapsed to less than 3 hours. Security teams aren't just dealing with more findings. They're operating in a fundamentally different environment where speed, volume, and noise have all scaled at once.

For security leaders, this raises a question no vendor dashboard can answer: when everything your tools surface looks like a priority, how do you decide what actually is one?

The problem compounds fast. AI-generated vulnerability reports, submitted in bulk with limited evidence and no proof of real-world impact, are flooding security queues alongside legitimate research. Teams burn cycles sorting speculative findings from genuine risk, and the window to act on real threats keeps shrinking. At the same time, frontier AI is starting to prove its worth on the other side of the equation, cutting false positives, proposing effective fixes, and giving defenders a real shot at clearing the iceberg of known zero-days that has haunted the industry for years. The bigger opportunity is shifting that discovery left, catching vulnerabilities earlier in the development pipeline so released software ships more secure than it does today.

None of that reduces the urgency of the fundamentals. Patch discipline matters more in the next twelve months than it has in the last ten, and segmentation and zero trust remain the difference between a contained incident and a company-defining breach. Breaches are inevitable. Defense has to be multilayer, built to contain blast radius and shut down lateral movement the moment something gets through.
