Back to Grandma’s
(even if she’s not actually yours)
A Saturday afternoon to slow down.
You don’t really feel allowed to stop.
So we made a place where you can.
Hosted by a group of Portuguese grandmothers from A Avó Veio Trabalhar.
This September, they'll be teaching us one of their favourite skills:
Giving an old shirt a new life.
Bring a plain shirt you've stopped wearing.
Together, we'll transform it slowly with traditional embroidery techniques, one stitch at a time. Not to make it perfect, just to make it yours again.
Along the way, expect homemade cake, tea, plenty of unsolicited grandma wisdom and a few hours where nobody expects you to be productive.
A Manual Break, granny approved.
Limited spots.
What this Saturday will look like:
A warm welcome at the door: tea, biscuits and a familiar question: “Have you eaten?”
A short introduction to A Avó Veio Trabalhar and the grandmothers hosting the afternoon
An upcycling embroidery workshop
Bring a plain shirt (non-stretch fabric works best) and learn how to give it a second life using simple embroidery techniques inspired by traditional Portuguese know-how. No previous experience required.
Homemade cake, tea and small Portuguese comforts throughout the afternoon.
Time to stay, chat, embroider or simply enjoy a slower pace.
Moments of care, conversation and grandma wisdom.
Leave with a shirt that's become a little more yours and, hopefully, a small reminder that you're allowed to stop.
Good to know
• No embroidery experience needed.
• No Portuguese required. We begin in English and then let grandma love language do the rest.
• Please bring one plain shirt (preferably woven rather than stretchy). We'll provide everything else.
• Suitable for complete beginners.
