Debate Night: The Internet

Debate Night: The Internet

O události

Join us for an engaging discussion on the impact of the internet on our thinking processes and society! 🤔💬

Thanks to the internet and the intellectual technologies that have emerged alongside it, the general public now has access to cognitive processes once reserved for elites. Some benefits include:

  • The popularization of video games, which can enhance visual focus and cognitive performance, especially for medical students in surgical training.
  • Improved working memory capacity linked to data juggling, thanks to the World Wide Web.

However, concerns arise regarding the potential negative effects of this technology:

  • Superficial understanding and distraction may replace deep, creative thinking.
  • Our growing dependence on the internet could impair our biological memory processing, as we increasingly rely on machines for storage.

Key topics for discussion include:

  • Privacy vs. security
  • Knowledge and real-life connections vs. access and connectivity
  • Multitasking vs. focus
  • Contemplation and solitude

Is the internet solely responsible for today's challenges? Should we reconsider our societal approach? What would that entail?

This debate will follow a British Parliamentary format with eight debaters divided into four teams of two.

Participants are encouraged to bring paper and pen for notes. Everyone is welcome, regardless of prior debating experience!
