Before leading the nation's 10th largest city, Matt was at the forefront of innovation in Silicon Valley. He co-founded Causes, a pioneering Facebook app that amassed over 180 million users across 150 countries, and later launched Brigade, a civic tech platform supported by venture capital.

Raised in Watsonville, CA, by a schoolteacher and a letter carrier, Matt’s journey is inspiring. He commuted up to four hours daily by public bus to attend a better school in San Jose before continuing his studies at Harvard, where he was both an honors student and student body president. Moreover, he dedicated time in Bolivia, building irrigation systems for family farmers. Upon returning, he taught middle school in San Jose through Teach for America, eventually founding organizations that empowered millions in civic engagement.

As Mayor, Matt emphasizes a critical belief: government should function effectively and be accountable when it does not. 🔍
