Hammer Projects: Gê Viana

O události

Join us for an immersive experience with Gê Viana, a visionary visual artist who employs collage, sound, video, and installation to delve into the rich material culture, oral histories, and syncretism within the African diaspora throughout Brazil.

Viana’s artistic journey traverses domestic, urban, and rural landscapes, merging analog and digital collage techniques with painting and early 20th-century photography. Her creations challenge conventional archives, bridging the gaps left by institutional memory through evocative imagery and soundscapes that celebrate the depth of Afro-Brazilian identity and heritage. 🌺

In this exhibition, Viana will unveil a captivating installation and new sculpture, featuring her short film Radiola de promessa (Radio of Promise, 2025). This poignant film captures everyday life in the rural heart of her hometown, Maranhão, in northeast Brazil. Here, the human body serves as a vessel of ancestral African rhythms, songs, dances, and memories, remixing the past with the present. 🎶

At the core of this exploration lies the themes of faith, sound, and belonging as Viana beautifully weaves reggae music into the cultural memory of Maranhão's landscapes.

Don't miss this groundbreaking presentation—the artist's first institutional showcase in the United States!
