Kostel sv. Janů
Guided by: Dalibor Halátek (National Heritage Institute)
The church is also known as the Church of St. John the Baptist. It was originally dedicated to both John the Evangelist and John the Baptist. It was founded in the 14th century in close proximity to the city walls, slightly earlier than the nearby Opava Castle, which was built later. Today, next to the church, you can find the oldest fragments of a tower from the medieval city walls. In the 18th century, the church underwent a significant transformation and took on a Baroque style, which was only cosmetically modified at the end of the 19th century and after war damage in 1945. Today, the church is a cultural monument owned by the Kostel sv. Janů z. s. association, which is working to preserve it and organizes cultural events and religious services there. Every year, the church is one of the venues for the Slunovrat Festival. You will also have the opportunity to visit the church’s roof truss and tower.
