On Freedom – Opening Night

Join us for an inspiring evening at the Opening Night of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music!

Kick off the night with a free outdoor pre-concert experience featuring a brass sextet and a special welcome by our Music Director Cristian Măcelaru. Bring your favorite takeout or snacks from home; table seating will be available.

🎼 Experience the powerful themes of freedom as the Festival Orchestra performs:

• Vivian Fung's "America the Beautiful?" (Festival Commission / world premiere): A thought-provoking piece reflecting on the tension between national ideals and lived reality.
• Pedro Emanuel Pereira's Clarinet Concerto (Festival Commission / world premiere), with the talented Carlos Ferreira on clarinet, blending Portuguese tradition with experimental innovation.
• Philip Glass's Symphony No. 15 "Lincoln" (West Coast premiere) featuring baritone Zachary James, which weaves Lincoln's own words into an urgency of music.
