Prohlídka hradebního opevnění
You will definitely encounter the massive walls that date back to the founding of Znojmo itself when you visit the town. The remains of the wall have undergone extensive reconstruction in recent years, creating a new tourist destination that was officially opened in 2018. During a guided tour, you will learn about the historical development of the city's fortifications and take a look inside three towers. In the Powder Tower, which got its name from the storage of gunpowder in the 18th century, you can explore the entire fortification in detail using a 3D model. In the adjacent New Tower, you will see an exhibition of period armor, which you can try on for yourself. Its roof offers a view of the valley from a previously unknown perspective.
The fortifications of the town began to be built when Znojmo was founded before 1226. The inner moat and inner wall with defensive towers date from this period. Over the following centuries, the fortifications were expanded with additional walls. Due to its location on the Moravian-Austrian border, Znojmo was the best-fortified town between Vienna and Prague. However, in the 17th and 18th centuries, the style of warfare changed and the medieval walls were no longer sufficient. After the Napoleonic Wars, the town's leadership gradually proceeded to demolish the gates and sell them to private owners. Avenues were planted on the outer belt of fortifications around the city (today's City Park). However, most of the fortifications have been preserved, and selected sections of the walls and defensive towers can be visited as part of a guided tour. All of the towers offer beautiful views of the city and its surroundings.
