🇺🇸 A Social Lecture with Public Historian Luke G. Boyd

Expert-led lectures in local spaces across NYC

🎙️ About the Talk

As America approaches its 250th anniversary, public historian Luke G. Boyd digs into the last major milestone — the 1976 Bicentennial — to uncover what it tells us about how this country sees itself today.

In 1976, the nation marked two centuries of independence with an enormous wave of celebration: massive parades, fireworks, historical reenactments, a cross-country Freedom Train, and tall ships crowding New York Harbor like something out of a maritime film. It was loud, visible, and inescapable.

But beneath the spectacle, the context was anything but simple. Post-Vietnam. Post-Watergate. Political fractures and economic anxiety ran deep — yet the country channeled its energy into heavily publicized national events and iconic patriotic campaigns. Sound familiar?

This talk examines how a divided nation used public spectacle to forge a shared identity, which stories were elevated, and which were quietly left out — and what all of this means for America heading into 2026.

🔍 We'll Explore:

  • 🎭 The gap between public spectacle and the reality simmering beneath it
  • 🤝 America's attempts to unify a fractured nation through branding and pageantry
  • 📺 How public memory is constructed through media, marketing, and mass events
  • 🔮 What lessons — and warnings — the 1976 moment holds for 2026 America
