The Philippines is experiencing a tiered adoption of Sustainable Finance. Universal Banks and commercial banks are leading the charge with polished internal sustainability policies, bond-fueled sustainable loans, alongside compliance of mandated disclosure requirements. The opposite side of the spectrum as represented by rural and thrift banks presents a fragmented approach where banks are playing catch-up to the standard set by larger banks.

This one-size-fits-all approach tends to ignore the unique advantages and contexts of smaller banks. Despite the challenges in implementing sustainable finance, pioneer rural and thrift banks are still able to deploy localized and impactful sustainable financing opportunities to their stakeholders. Thus there is an urgent need to shift the narrative from passive regulatory compliance to realized practical and commercial viability. Thus, by showcasing existing successful sustainable finance pilots through the showcase the sector can see tangible results and stories to stray away from the misconception that sustainable finance is exclusive to larger financial institutions.
