Cataclysm by Malik Seneferu
At his Hunters Point studio, Malik described how he’d name his show: Cataclysm
“Cataclysm is not simply about destruction. It is about the moment when history shifts beneath our feet. It is the collision of memory, ancestry, environment, and spirit. These works explore what survives after upheaval and what emerges when communities refuse to disappear. Every painting is an act of remembering, rebuilding, and reclaiming.”
I met Malik painting a mural on 6th street - by his side was a childhood friend who he had taught to lean into his artistic side. After his release from prison, he began to carve soap sculptures. A cart full of soap roses by his side, he told me his plan to spread them out across the various galleries and community centers in SOMA.
Hopeful, his friend expressed how thoroughly Malik’s influence had changed his life. As an artist, a mentor and a friend.
As I watched Malik paint, a constant stream of friendly faces wandered into him. Hugs became well wishes became invites to spaces.
Immediately it became clear to me, Malik was the type of artist that functioned as a real pillar of his community. The heart and soul of the city.
His masterful catalogue reflects this - everything from colorful abstracted figures inspired by his time in Africa, to found object sculptures. A broad and varied reflection of his time in the Bay and abroad.
