KATMA
Join us at the club for an electrifying experience like no other! 🎶
KATMA — a term rooted in Sudanese slang meaning "suffocation" or "no room to breathe" — encapsulates the raw energy of an underground dancefloor. Created and directed by Azzam Mohamed (Sculptured Riddims, Sydney Festival 2024) alongside the talented Katma team, this immersive performance is inspired by the vibrant party scenes of Sudan and Australia, along with iconic dance spots such as The Loft in New York.
Developed at PYT Fairfield in Western Sydney, KATMA embodies the inclusivity and spirit of its community. With no seats to constrain you, the dancefloor takes center stage, inviting you to participate in a living club ritual. Seven remarkable dancers will blend street and club styles — from breaking and hip-hop to krump, waacking, locking, house, and Afro dances — seamlessly shifting between individual expression and collective rhythm. 🕺💃
This performance pays homage to the roots of these dance forms, extending gratitude to the vibrant communities that nurtured them: the African diaspora, Black and Latino communities, and the LGBTQIA+ underground. KATMA celebrates dance as a universal language, transforming a space of strangers into an electric atmosphere filled with rhythm, movement, and presence.
Part performance, part dancefloor, KATMA invites you to step into the pulsating energy of club culture — to witness, move, and feel the heartbeat of a living culture.
KATMA is supported by St. Joseph Communications.
