Punctum Film Club #6: Suburbia (1983)

Über die Veranstaltung

Join us for the 6th installment of the Punctum Film Club as we showcase the debut feature film of the "rock 'n roll anthropologist" Penelope Spheeris: Suburbia.

Plot Overview: The narrative follows Evan, who escapes an abusive alcoholic mother and discovers a new life among fellow young runaways in an abandoned building in the Los Angeles suburbs. However, their unconventional lifestyle attracts the attention of local middle-class families determined to drive them away at any cost.

Theme Exploration: Suburbia delves into profound themes such as youth alienation, generation gaps, broken families, and the dual nature of punk subculture, both positive and negative. Penelope Spheeris based the film on real stories from the LA punk scene, enlisting local musicians instead of professional actors—most notably, future RHCP founder Flea. It features performances from bands such as D.I., The Vandals, and TSOL.

Despite its historical and cultural significance being somewhat overshadowed due to investor Roger Corman's imposed exploitation elements, we believe Suburbia remains a quintessential film of the 80s.
