A dead newborn baby is found in the cell of novice Agnes in a convent in Montreal. She is accused of murder, but there is one catch – Agnes remembers nothing from that fateful night. Psychologist Martha Livingstone is called in to decide whether Agnes, who is mentally retarded, is competent to stand trial.

Miriam Ruth, the abbess of the convent, throws herself into the fight for Agnes and her purity and innocence. However, she has her own secrets from the past, which she anxiously hides from the world.
