What to Expect:
- A conversation unpacking colonial impacts on travel
- An activity designed to encourage a rethinking of how travel currently presents countries
- A Q&A session with Rida Ali about storytelling for heritage revival, providing an opportunity to ask questions
Introducing Rida Ali
Rida Ali is a Pakistani American journalist, digital storyteller, and historian. Her work focuses on South Asian history, identity, and collective memory through a decolonial lens. Rida encourages audiences to approach places through education rather than extraction, centering local histories and communities. Her mission is to help diaspora communities reconnect with their heritage in thoughtful and responsible ways.
About The Hybrid Tours
Founded by two women from the Global Majority, The Hybrid Tours aims to disrupt the travel industry through community-led tourism. We highlight the best sights while amplifying the often-untold history and heritage of the places we visit.
Why This Matters
Storytelling shapes our perception of the places we travel to, but too often, these narratives are told through a colonial lens, reducing cultures to mere aesthetics and communities to backdrops. This event provides a space to unpack these patterns and practice telling stories differently, while exploring how travel and storytelling can revive heritage for the diaspora, reconnecting people to place, memory, and identity.
