FIELD TRIP - Western Snake River Plain

Join us for a 3-hour morning drive/escorted tour with geologist Dr. Terry S. Maley to explore the fascinating Western Snake River Plain!

📍 Meeting Point: Old Pen gravel lot, 2445 Old Penitentiary Rd, Boise, near the trailhead sign at 7:45 am for an 8 am departure. This site will also serve as our first stop. Expect minimal walking—no more than a few hundred yards. (Drive, talk, walk…repeat)

🗺️ Tour Highlights:

• Site 1: Old Pen - View Table Rock and the Terteling Springs formation. Learn about the 9-million-year-old Boise Basalt Assemblage and the geothermal aquifer.
• Site 2: North Alto Via and Table Rock Road - Overview of the Western Snake River Plain, Owyhee front, and the 2016 Alto Via Court slump.
• Site 3: Eastdale Drive - Examine two water-affected basalt flows and their unique characteristics.
• Site 4: Shaw Mountain Road/Cottonwood Creek - Discover the Idaho batholith and Cottonwood Creek rhyolite.

📚 Each participant will receive a detailed field guide via email a couple of days before the trip.

About Dr. Terry S. Maley:

Dr. Maley is a renowned lecturer with over 50 years of fieldwork experience. He has worked for the Department of the Interior and has authored more than 50 technical papers and ten books on geology. His book, Exploring Idaho Geology, is available in the museum Gift Shop.
