Born Joseph Saddler on January 1, 1957, in the South Bronx, Grandmaster Flash is undeniably one of Hip Hop’s original innovators. Recognized as an architect of the culture, he was the first DJ to transform the turntable into a musical instrument through his Quick Mix Theory and innovative devices.

His technical innovations and artistic contributions have earned him numerous accolades, influencing generations of DJs, producers, and hip-hop artists. In the early days of the genre, he manipulated music with his fingers on vinyl, perfected beat looping, and discovered many iconic beats still sampled today. The New York Times calls him Hip Hop’s first virtuoso.

Today, he represents an entire generation of 1970s Hip Hop pioneers. From his electrifying live shows to his production role on Netflix’s The Get Down, Grandmaster Flash is a historian, storyteller, and cultural force. This music-driven drama documents the emergence of hip-hop in the late 1970s, showcasing the lives, art, music, and dance of young people in the South Bronx.
