In our industry, the power consumed by the software we build has a significant impact on natural resources. As engineers, it can be challenging to make the best choices to minimize resource usage.

We are excited to welcome Anne Currie, co-founder of the Green Software Foundation and co-author of the O'Reilly book Building Green Software. Anne will share insights on the current challenges engineers face in reducing carbon emissions.

Our second speaker, Bastien Bigué, a Data Engineer at ElectricityMaps, will discuss how the cleanliness of the electricity grid affects software performance. He will explain how ElectricityMaps transforms data from various sources to provide real-time insights into grid cleanliness and its implications for AI workloads.

Abstract:

The electricity that powers our software comes from a grid whose cleanliness changes by the hour: how much carbon it emits can shift dramatically depending on where and when it's generated. As software engineers, we rarely see this variability. At Electricity Maps, we turn heterogeneous data from hundreds of sources into a signal that shows exactly how clean the grid is, hour by hour. This talk looks at what that takes, and what it means for the AI workloads.
