Svoura is a Greek orchestra in Stockholm with great interest in the Greek traditional music, folklore and Rebetiko genres.
Svoura (spinning top) is a toy designed to spin rapidly on the ground, the motion of which causes it to remain precisely balanced on its tip due to its rotational inertia. The rotation axis is not completely vertical resulting in the ever-widening cone deletion. Svoura is known from ancient times, by the antient Greek name “strobos”.
The project was established in 2017, following an internal need to create an orchestra in Scandinavia with diverse music background that could deliver a unique sound bringing the traditional music and poetry of Greece and breathing into it the folklore and Rebetiko spirit, as delivered to us through its continuous transformations. With their youthful spirit they bring this music to the forefront, giving the space it deserves to the music scene. The material is presented with respect to its original performances without though eliminating the individual influences the line-up brings to the songs and tunes from all over Greece.
