Hike to Herzogstand + (optional) Swim in Walchensee

Join us for a classic summer day in the Bavarian Alps! 🌄

Hike Details:

• 📍 Meeting Point: Munich Central Station (Hauptbahnhof), at the start of the platform for the RB66 train to Kochel.

• 🥾 Elevation Gain: 900m; Hiking Time: 2.5 - 3.5 hours

The hike is moderately challenging, focusing on enjoyment rather than speed. No one gets hurried, and no one is left behind.

Plan:

• Meet at Munich Central Station at 8:45 AM and take the RB66 train to Kochel at 9:00 AM.
• After a change in Kochel, we’ll take a bus to Herzogstand cable car station, arriving around 10:39 AM.
• Instead of the cable car, we’ll hike up to Berggasthaus Herzogstand, reaching there around 1:00-1:30 PM for lunch.
• Enjoy some free time at the top with an option to climb the Herzogstand peak. We’ll descend by cable car (optional, one-way fare €12) and have an optional swim in Lake Walchensee afterward. 🌊

Important Notes:

• The lake is deep, and the water can be quite cold even in summer.
• The return bus departs every 30 minutes until 8:49 PM. It’s advisable not to leave too late to avoid long waits for the next bus or train.

What to Bring:

• Fitness & Gear: Good fitness, sure-footedness for steep/rocky trails, and sturdy hiking boots with ankle support.
• Water & Snacks: Enough to last until lunch.
• Swimming: Be a confident swimmer if you plan to swim in the lake.
• Cash/Card: For lunch and the €12 cable car fare.

Backup Plan:
In case of poor weather, we’ll take the next train to Prien am Chiemsee for a relaxing time at the lake, visiting cafes/restaurants, and walking along the promenade.
