Historic Cemetery - Clean Up Day
Join us for a meaningful Cemetery Clean Up Day as we work together to restore a historic site that honors over 100 African American graves, some belonging to Harnett County’s enslaved people. These graves have been neglected for nearly 65 years and are concealed by overgrowth and debris.
🗂️ Family Surnames Documented: Massey, Spears, McKoy, McKay, McLeod, Gaskin, Turner, and Davis, among possibly others from as early as the mid-1800s.
🤝 We need community volunteers to help uncover and preserve this important cemetery. Whether you can contribute for a few minutes or the entire day, your presence will make a difference!
📍 Where: Onsite at the cemetery near Campbell University. (Address will be provided soon.)
🛠️ What to Bring: Tools such as leaf blowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, shovels, rakes, pruning shears, and work gloves are all welcome. Rakes will be particularly useful during this phase of the project. Please wear appropriate clothing and shoes (closed-toe), and consider bringing snacks, water, and essentials like a chair for breaks, a hat, and sunscreen.
⚠️ Note: There are no bathrooms on site. Kindly respect the privacy of the land, visiting only during scheduled clean-up times or by appointment.
💖 We sincerely appreciate all volunteers who come together to help honor and restore this cherished site!
