House of Waters
A unique instrumental combination of Japanese cymbals, six-string bass guitar, and percussion instruments performed by House of Waters.
"In today's world, there are no musical boundaries," says Max ZT of the trio House of Waters, who brings these words to life by incorporating elements of West African, jazz, psychedelic, indie rock, classical, and world music into their unique sound.
Max ZT, "Jimi Hendrix on the dulcimer" (NPR), is an innovator of an instrument that is rarely heard in contemporary music. With roots in Irish folk music, Max studied in Senegal with the Cissoko Griot family and in India with santoor master Pandit Shivkumar Sharma. His unorthodox playing style has been a pioneering force in the revolution of dulcimer playing techniques.
Moto Fukushima is a renowned master of the six-string bass guitar. With a background in jazz improvisation, Western classical music, and South American music, Moto's playing is a combination of delicacy, subtlety, and power that leaves audiences "open-mouthed in awe" (Jazz Wise).
Nominated for a 2024 Grammy Award in the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album category, House of Waters is a representative of jazz innovation. On their new recording, GroundUp Music, On Becoming, they are joined by first-rate accompanists—drummer Antonio Sanchez, who joins them throughout the album, guitarist Mike Stern, and singer Priya.
