What does it mean to read wood?

In Japan, carpenters, foresters, and sawmill workers look beyond just the strength or utility of wood. They observe the grain, growth rings, knots, curvature, and subtle irregularities to interpret the environment where the tree grew, the time it has lived through, and its unique character.

IPPON NIPPON PARIS: Reading Wood invites you to explore this perspective through an exhibition by architect and artist Fumihiko Sano, hands-on workshops led by Japanese carpenters, and an ongoing dialogue with visitors.

This exhibition in Paris aims not to merely introduce Japanese culture but to encourage visitors to discover, question, and reflect together.
