Kostel sv. Janů
Join us for a guided tour led by Dalibor Halátek from the National Heritage Institute.
The Church of St. John the Baptist, originally dedicated to both John the Evangelist and John the Baptist, was founded in the 14th century near the city walls, predating the nearby Opava Castle. Today, you can find the oldest fragments of a tower from the medieval city walls next to the church.
In the 18th century, the church underwent a significant transformation into the Baroque style, with cosmetic modifications made at the end of the 19th century and after war damage in 1945. Currently, it is a cultural monument owned by the Kostel sv. Janů z. s. association, which is dedicated to its preservation and organizes cultural events and religious services. The church is also a venue for the Slunovrat Festival each year.
You will have the opportunity to visit the church’s roof truss and tower during the tour.
Estimated tour duration: 60 minutes.
By purchasing a ticket, you will support the preservation of the church. Tickets can be purchased via GOOUT, at the Municipal House reception desk, or on-site if available.
