About the event
Join staff and volunteers for a celebration of Indigenous culture! ๐
- Observe demonstrations and learn about the Indigenous Peoples that lived in Southeast Texas.
- Follow a storytrail to the replica Akokisa Village and discover how people lived off the land.
- Visit demonstration booths and participate in hands-on activities with community partners, including:
- Caddo Mounds State Park
- Bayou Land Conservancy
- Texas Archaeological Society
- American Indian Center
- Spring Historical Museum
- Starbucks (with yaupon tea to sample) โ
Note: Booths will close at 11:00 a.m. to allow time to walk to the stage for the special event.
- Chikawa Aztec Dance will perform at 11:30 a.m. on the stage in the greenspace across from the Nature Center.
- Plenty of hands-on activities for patrons of all ages, led by community volunteers.

Accessibility: Our greenspace & stage are accessible from the main parking lot, but the surface is grass. The Akokisa village is a 1/3-mile hike on an uneven gravel trail, and the village has mulch trails, which are not wheelchair accessible. Sturdy strollers or wagons are recommended for younger audiences.
