Nebojsy + Angela Nwagbo: Confluence
🌟 Nebojsy 🌟
„bylo, nebude, v jednom domě…”
Personal narratives of the performers invite us into the depths of a home and the boundary between my body and others'. Tereza has just moved in, Klára is baking cookies, and Kristýna is celebrating her 18th birthday.
This immersive performance by Tereza Holubová, Klára Kočárková, and Kristýna Štarhová explores the inner space of rejection, being trapped within oneself, and the pivotal moment of choosing whether to give life or not. Through gesture, step, and word, the performers traverse their territory of emptiness, loss, or discovery. With the audience alongside them, they allow themselves, through this shared moment, to take the risk of embarking on their own journey.
“The second work of Nebojsy is like being abruptly pulled from the road in front of a speeding truck. Three documentary stories from three women, within which you physically find yourself, will mercilessly pull you into their family dynamics. For a moment, you will believe you are a part of it, not just as voyeurs but as direct participants in parallel running events. The order of the stories is drawn randomly as they navigate through the warm and inviting space of Palác Akropolis.” – Miřenka Čechová, 13.11.2023
This performance was created as part of the Emergency Dances IV. and Tantehorse project.
🌍 Confluence 🌍
Czech-Nigerian performer Angela Nwagbo unfolds an intimate exploration into the layered world of cultural, linguistic, and social identity in her authorial performance, Confluence.
Straddling physical theatre, dance, documentary narrative, and anthropological theatre, her journey of self-discovery unfolds—a profound story of a woman transitioning between two continents, between roots and present, and between societal expectations and her own truth.
Confluence touches upon themes of ethnic identity, intercultural dialogue, and the desire for belonging. Music, fashion, and movement become carriers of meaning—melding African and Slavic folklore, as well as Western and African dance forms, creating a new, unique narrative language.
This performance serves not only as a personal statement but as a mirror reflecting our unspoken prejudices and a vision of a world where diversity signifies unity rather than division.
Angela Nwagbo is an actress and dancer of Czech-Nigerian descent, a graduate in acting for alternative and puppet theatre from DAMU. Her professional practice reflects a multi-genre approach, engaging in drama, alternative, musical, and movement theatre, film, and contemporary dance, as well as urban and African dance forms. In 2023, she completed a dance residency at the École des Sables in Senegal and, beyond her artistry, she is involved in anthropological research on African and Afro-Czech identities at the University of Hradec Králové. As an Afro-Czech, she feels it is crucial to draw attention to cultural and ethnic identity issues and to democratize academic knowledge through her performance art.
In her artistic practice, Angela focuses on ethnic and cultural identity, especially among mixed-heritage individuals. Through physical theatre, dance, storytelling, fashion, and music, she explores belonging, racial dynamics, and challenges faced by mixed-race individuals in forming belonging within Czech society. Her goal is to connect the fields of anthropological research and theatre, seeking to bridge specific spaces and social bubbles, democratize knowledge, and foster deeper understanding among people from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
