Opening Night – 10 Nights in Port, Nullians & In our hands, we hold
Join us for the Opening Night of 10 Nights in Port at the Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre! 🌟 Experience an evening filled with food, fire, and two exciting new exhibitions:
In Our Hands, We Hold
Presented by WFAC, this exhibition showcases artists who center their practices around weaving, both as a physical object and an intangible idea. Through various forms like portals, baskets, and vessels, the exhibition shares ancient and contemporary stories shaped by knowledge-sharing and truth-telling.
Featuring the work of First Nations women and artists connected to ancestral stories, this exhibition highlights themes of generosity, time, and our understanding of place in the world. Co-curated by Zali Morgan and Abigail Moncrieff, it includes artists such as:
- Lorraine Connelly-Northey (Waradgerie)
- Sharyn Egan (Whadjuk Nyoongar)
- Brett Nannup (Noongar)
- James Nyugen
- Clare Peake
- Mabel Juli (Gija)
- Chantal Fraser
- Beverly Thomson (Yamatji)
- Katie West (Yindjibarndi)
Nullians
Presented by 10 Nights in Port, this satirical exhibition by Kamsani Bin Salleh (Kambarni) explores the ideologies of Australia as an extraction colony through comic-style illustrations. The Nullians are expressive characters that challenge the colonial narrative of “land belonging to no one.”
Using humor, this exhibition addresses topics from microaggressions to genocide, weaving together historical events and contemporary culture to prompt reflection on Australia’s past and present.
Gather with us as the festival begins, explore both exhibitions, and celebrate this special opening night! 🎊
