
“Passage” Storytelling & Portrait Trading Workshop
About the event
Join No, YOU Tell It! & New Women New Yorkers for a creative exploration of your personal stories! 🌍✨
In this free workshop, participants will:
- Engage in Generative Writing: Use prompts from Kelly Jean Fitzsimmons and Zach Rothman-Hicks to brainstorm your “Passage” stories.
- Interview Story Partners: Share and learn more about each other's journeys.
- Create Symbolic Portraits: Trace each other’s faces on transparency paper and incorporate the stories shared to craft a composite portrait.
- Share Your Creations: Present the portraits and the stories behind them.
This workshop is part of the Governors Island House Crawl & Parade and serves as a kick-off for the 9/24 “Passage” show produced in partnership with Culture Lab LIC and New Women New Yorkers. Follow @noyoutellit for updates!
About the Facilitators:
- Kelly Jean Fitzsimmons: A Queens-based writer and storyteller, her work has appeared in various publications. She is the creator of No, YOU Tell It! and the editor of multiple anthologies. Learn more at kellyjeanfitzsimmons.com and follow @kjfitzsimmons.
- Zach Rothman-Hicks: An educator and multimedia artist, he initiates projects that encourage dialogue and reflection. Follow his work at gabbing_with_gays.
Getting to Governors Island:
- Ferry Locations: Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn Bridge Park (Pier 6), or Red Hook/Atlantic Basin.
- Ferry Schedule: Runs every 30 minutes. Check the schedule here.
- Cost: FREE before 11:00 AM!

Explore other artist residency spaces and events throughout the island! 🌳 Bring a reusable water bottle, as there are refill stations available. Enjoy various restaurants and food vendors, or bring your own snacks for a picnic! 🥪🍉
